Happy New Year, everyone! 🥳 Here’s a breakdown of the first (though it depends!) card of the Major Arcana, The Fool. I explain the symbolism behind it and why I chose Sam for my version of it. Sam is the main character from my @tapascommunity #graphicnovels, “Sam in New York” and “Finding Sam.”
Read “Finding Sam” for more information about how his parents see his desire to become an actor.
Although “Finding Sam” isn’t canon, since it takes place in an alternative timeline, it’s a good approximation of how his parents will see his desire to become an actor and filmmaker later down the line. In “Sam in New York,” we’re still looking at Sam’s childhood and he only starts talking about being a famous actor when he’s in university.

Hi everyone. Happy New Year and hope you had a great New Year’s Eve and a great party. To begin the new year, we’re going to start talking about The Fool tarot card, which is the first card in the Major Arcana.
I have chosen to represent The Fool as the main character of my Tapas graphic novel, “Sam in New York,” Sam Abramov. Why? Because like all Fools, Sam is daring and creative. He wants to be a world-famous actor and filmmaker even though his family and friends, especially his parents, don’t believe he can do this. Instead, his parents want him to be a lawyer, which they believe to be a better job for him because it is stable and has a good reputation.
Like all Fools, Sam is at the beginning of his journey, because he wants to prove to his parents and his family and his friends that he is capable of becoming this actor and filmmaker he wants to be so badly.
In reverse, THe Fool symbolizes stupidity, lack of direction, and naivety, which Sam’s parents always see in him, all the time. In contrast, Sam’s friends tend to see him in a more positive light. However, his parents (unfortunately) think he’s very naive for thinking that he can make a living as an actor even though he has no connections in the field.
Have you ever wondered why The Fool is zero in the Major Arcana? It’s because zero represents infinity, which means there’s an unlimited number of possibilities. This means that The Fool can be either at the beginning or the end of the Major Arcana. As such, some people consider The Fool to be something that can be placed anywhere in the deck. The Major Arcana is considered the Fool’s journey, so he’s ever-present, so as such, he doesn’t really need a number.
Sam, as The Fool, is standing on a cliff because he’s overlooking the world and thinking about what he can contribute to it. He is looking positively towards the sky and the Universe and he’s unaware that there are dangers lurking underneath the cliff. The mountains behind him also symbolize the challenges people always have to face. Even though the mountains are always present behind him, The Fool doesn’t care, because he’s a naturally optimistic person.
Happy New Year, everyone! Thank you so much for joining me on this journey and I hope everyone is like Sam this year - optimistic and willing to take on any challenges.
See you next week for our next tarot analysis!
