Hi everyone! This week, we’ll look at The Hanged Man in my tarot deck, the Fortunus Games tarot deck.
I have chosen to portray the Hanged Man as Joel Farber from my graphic novel, “The Book of Joel.”
This is because the Hanged Man symbolizes the following:
Wisdom, circumspection, discernment, trials, sacrifice, intuition, divination, prophecy.
In reverse, the Hanged Man symbolizes selfishness, the crowd, and the body politic.
The halo burning brightly around the hanged man's head can signify higher learning or enlightenment.
All of this fits Joel really well since he seeks wisdom and knowledge. More than anything, Joel wants to know what makes himself and the world tick and why the world is full of misunderstandings, miscommunications, and other problems. As a former stutterer who didn’t have the best relationship with his parents, Joel wants to better understand what motivates people to become the way they are. Why are we here? Why do we say the things we say and do the things we do? Or in Joel’s case, desist from doing certain things, such as pursuing intimacy, which he tries to convince himself is pointless.
This card also fits his negative traits, including succumbing to peer/public pressure (which he often succumbed to as a teen) and selfishness (in his case, self-absorption and being overly obsessed with proving a point - namely, the point that he doesn’t need others to be happy and that he doesn’t care what others think about him).
